MPC's Kayla Smith named CCCWVCA State Player of the Week
Monterey Peninsula College opposite Kayla Smith, El Camino middle blocker Amiekal Looney, and Sacramento City middle blocker Norah Mayer were selected as the CCCWVCA State Players of the Week #9.
Smith, a 6-foot-1 sophomore from Conway High in Arizona, totaled 33 kills in a pair of MPC victories. In a Lobos sweep over Las Positas, Smith pounded her season high of 18 kills, hitting .626 in just 22 attempts plus had three blocks.
Looney, a 6-foot freshman from Venice High in Los Angeles, powered 43 kills, attacking at an impressive .475, adding seven blocks (three solos) and served two aces in two El Camino victories. She also scored a season best of 23 kills in a 5-set triumph over East LA. She is second in the entire 10-team, South Coast Conference in blocks average at 0.83 and fourth in overall kills.
Mayer, a 5-8 sophomore out of Lodi High, helped a red-hot Sacramento squad to two Big 8 Conference sweeps over Sierra and Cosumnes River. She totaled 22 kills, nine digs and four blocks. Against CRC, she scored 12 kills while hitting .381. It's the second straight week in which a Panthers player earned Player of the Week honors.
